Quest will be taking our formal vote this upcoming Sunday. While some good questions have come from church folks, we are expecting an overwhelming vote in favor of the “merger.” The “merger” is an amazing story because while two equal churches are coming together, one [Interbay] has chosen to join Quest and dissolve as a formal organization and institution. Their stories, people, gifts, and such will continue through the ministry at Quest. Continue reading “church merger – the larger Kingdom”
women – created in His image
The image above is haunting. I found it on flickr and haven’t been able to get my mind off it. This past Sunday, we continued our teaching through Colossians and have parked for two Sundays to focus on Colossians 3.18-19:
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. [tNIV] Continue reading “women – created in His image”
comfort women | dignity walk
I was 15 when I first learned about ‘comfort women.’ I thought it was a fictitious story; I thought, “That’s unbelievable. How is that even possible?” Tragically, it happens and is still happening in different forms. I know there will come a day when my kids will learn about things that happened in my generation and will wonder, “Why didn’t anyone [including my parents] do anything about it?” That will be another occasion I will be tempted to hide. The issues of human rights, children’s right, women’s rights, and global peace must still be forefront in our hearts. Continue reading “comfort women | dignity walk”
seattle PI guest column on the tragedy of virginia tech
Here’s the guest column I had the privilege of writing for the Seattle Post Intelligencer [published for Tuesday, April 24, 2007]. I’ve also included some other reads I have personally found very moving and insightful. I was limited by time and a word count, but hoped that this ‘guest column’ would be a source of healing, deeper understanding, and blessing to many. I wish I did a better job, [and given them my own title], and spoken from a larger Asian perspective. One clarification I want to make – while I and other Koreans/Asians grieve and feel pain and ‘shame’ over Seung Hui Cho, we are not the victims in this tragedy. My hope was to convey that no matter who or what we are, we are all connected to one another – not just because of our ethnic identity but our larger human collective and narrative. Because of the invitation to address the larger Washington readership, I chose not to be preachy. Much of this editorial comes from some initial thoughts shared in a blog entry from last week entitled, ‘Making Sense of the Senseless.’ Continue reading “seattle PI guest column on the tragedy of virginia tech”
church merger transition
This upcoming Sunday is a fairly monumental day for Quest church [and Interbay]. Our neighbors – Interbay Church – also our landlords – will be taking their 2nd and final vote to decide whether they will merge with and into Quest Church. During the first vote, 82% of their membership (total adult congregation = 60 folks) voted to move forward to work on a ‘Transition Plan.’ This upcoming Sunday, they will vote on the ‘Transition Plan’ and ultimately, on the merger as it will only require 51% of the members’ vote. The past couple months have been filled with meetings, prayers, discussions, and lots of hard work on the formation of this ‘Transition Plan.’ Continue reading “church merger transition”
church merger – the possibilities?
As some of you already know, Interbay Church – a ‘traditional’ and older church with a history of over 5o years has decided to move forward in the process to merge with Quest Church. Quest is a young (average age about 26-27), urban, multiethnic, and emerging church. It is not a stretch to say that Quest and Interbay are as different as they come. And yet, we’re not as different. Regardless, we had our first ‘transition team’ meeting last night. Six reps from each church met for a few hours to go through the details of ‘what will this look like?” Continue reading “church merger – the possibilities?”
