the best book you read this past year and…

Well, it’s that time of the year where folks start sharing their “best of” lists. I’ll likely post a couple myself but I thought this would be a good one for all of us to participate in.

Two very simple questions:

  • What was the best book you’ve read this year?
  • What’s the one book you want to read in 2010?

Here are my answers.

what are we exactly standing up for when we stand for christmas?

Speaking of some of my favorite blogs, here’s a post from one of them entitled, ‘Stand Up for Christmas?’. I don’t think that she’ll mind me sharing her post in its entirety (below)  as I’ve done it once before but it’s too good of a read not to share.

I’m sharing this not because I’m trying to throw Focus on the Family under the train. Believe it or not, I have a lot of respect for the big picture vision of their ministry. Hate them or love them, they are doing some things that not many dare even engage. We can often rant, complain, (and blog), but they’ve been doing work to build up one of the cornerstones of a healthy society: Family.

But when they miss the boat on occasions, they really miss the boat and I think this might be an occasion they missed the boat. Let me also say that I recently had the privilege of meeting the new President of Focus on the Family (Dobson resigned this past year) and I was appreciative of our time together…

Why can’t we get behind another campaign like this one that shows that so little of what we earn can bless so many around the world? For example, $100 can radically impact a woman in Eastern Congo impacted by war and gender violence.

I’ll warn you though that there’s some profanity in her post. I don’t know who her pastor is but he should probably have a talk with her because he would never use profanity in his blog.

Read the post below. I get what Focus on the Family is trying to do but read what the author is trying to say. Agree? Disagree? Both? Thoughts?

I’ve been trying to blog more positively this month, but I can’t resist taking a shot at this one. Focus on the Family’s “keep the Christ in Christmas” initiative. You get to rate retailers on how christmas-friendly they are (aka whether they say “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” when you walk in the door). Stores can be rated Continue reading “what are we exactly standing up for when we stand for christmas?”

which message are you listening to?

Have you seen the two videos below produced by Dove?

I showed one of them yesterday before my sermon and the second was a bit too risque to show with some younger folks in our midst. My sermon yesterday was part of a series of sermons on Relationships (through April 2010) and the focus for this talk was on Self Identity.

My point is simple:

Beware of the dangers of Self-Deification and Self-Hatred. Embrace the Truth that God created us, knows us, and loves us. The world often sees human beings as commodities and consumers. The good news is that God sees us as His creations. Good news indeed…

Rather than allowing truths of God to inform and transform our lives (Psalm 139), we can fall prey to the messages of the world around us that often convey to us that we simply not _________ enough.

What is your struggle?

I think for me, I wrestle with Continue reading “which message are you listening to?”

“what seminary should i go to?”

Someone asks me this question once every couple weeks:

What seminary or grad school (theology/religion) would you recommend?

It’s hard to give a simple answer without understanding a person’s context:

  • Who are you?
  • What’s your biblical and theological worldview?
  • Do you want to go into vocational ministry or into academics?

But for the sake of this blogpost and because the majority of these emails I get are from folks wanting to go into pastoral ministry:

  • What would your recommendations be for someone that is seeking to go into pastoral ministry? Why?
  • Where did you go to seminary or grad school? Would you recommend it to others or not?
  • Where are you currently at? And…?

we are the most over-rated generation in human history

Ideas.

I’ve always been an ideas person.  And I think in many ways, it speaks to the numerous privileges and opportunities we all have in our lives.  I am certainly an example of someone with abundant privileges and opportunities.

Having said that, I think it lends itself to this theory that I have that we are part of the most over-rated generation in human history – because we have access to so much data, info, resources, modes of communication…but end up doing so little. We tweet, blog, talk, preach, retweet, share, etc…and while I’m not diminishing that the aforementioned things aren’t actions per se but what are the “count the costs” behind our actions? What are our sacrifices?

Or how does that verse go?

Much has been given…and much is to be expected. (Luke 12:48)

Or another way to look at it is that we tend to fall in love with our ideas more than actually doing something Continue reading “we are the most over-rated generation in human history”

what’s your feel good movie?

Wow. I noticed that most of my entries the past week or so have been very intense. So, let’s take a step back. For goodness sake, it’s Thanksgiving week! And we also need to get many of our blog lurkers and stalkers off the sidelines and onto the comments.

No one will bite…but I can’t guarantee it after this week.

Here’s the simple question:

What are you go to feel good movies that you watch to lift your spirits? The films you watch when you’re feeling down, knocked down, or in need of inspiration?

How about three? But share at least one.

My three+ in no particular order: Continue reading “what’s your feel good movie?”
