We have to see justice as part of discipleship and ultimately…our worship of God.

passion-2011-worship-and-justice

Over the years, I’ve been given by some the mini-reputation as a leader in the field of justice. At first, I took it as a compliment and  of course, I still do because I care a lot about justice. I know that people mean well. But I care about justice not  just for the sake of justice. I care about justice…because I care much about the Gospel.

And sometimes, when I hear folks talk about justice in the church, I cringe…

I cringe because if we’re not careful, we’re again compartmentalizing justice rather than seeing it as part of the whole Gospel; We need to see justice as a critical part of God’s character and thus, our discipleship and worship.

Just like we shouldn’t extract the character of “love” or “grace” or “holiness” from God’s character, such must be the case with justice.

People often ask me, “What’s the most critical part about seeking justice.”

My answer:

We must not just seek justice but live justly. Justice work and just living are part of our discipleship. Justice contributes to our worship of God. Justice is worship.

what exactly is a worshipper?

What is worship? And what does it mean to be a worshipper?

After teaching through the Book of Acts for the past two years, and relishing in the years we studied and taught through Genesis and Exodus, and seeing this Truth throughout the narrative of the Story of God in a book known to us as the Bible, it has become clear[er] to me what worship is.

We know that this God is personal because we know that this God becomes personal when God chooses to be consumed by the very flesh and bone that consume our essence and chooses to become anthropos.

He chooses to become one of us though His Son, Jesus Christ, and in a world of constant and extravagant upward mobility, God does the unthinkable and becomes one of us, dwells with us, walks with us, and ultimately, dies for us.  Jesus…Amazing. Truly amazing.

Worship then is acknowledging that not only is there this Personal and Infinite God but Read the rest of this entry »

Summers evenings are the best in #Seattle and enjoying some sacred time with the family. So proud of the young woman our daughter, @_jubileee, is becoming as she enters her senior year in high school. Our prayer is that she continues to grow in her identity and faith in Christ; that she may hold God's Word close to her heart; that she may grow to be light and salt in an ever challenging culture; that she knows she is deeply loved and pursued by Christ

@_jubileee, is also an incredibly talented photographer. Check out her feed. Some sacred time with my oldest daughter last night. That little dot on the left is her. We were the only ones by the lighthouse last night to enjoy this breathtaking sunset. Trying to enjoy these moments before she heads off to college in about one year. #discoverypark #seattle #fatherdaughtertime Seattle. Right now. So beautiful...but don't move here. No more traffic. Breathe in. Breathe out. Tranquility. Seattle showing off. Right now. Nothing like Seattle summers and late sunsets. #nofilter #seattle #kerrypark Invest in your soul.
