i left my heart in guatemala

As most of you know, Minhee and I spent several days in Guatemala last week to do some research and networking for our personal growth and for ODW. Even despite my brief time and limited exposure, I think I left my heart in Guatemala.

Guatemala is a beautiful country but like every place, it has both examples of beauty and depravity. During our few days there, we spent the majority of our daytime with an NGO called Lemonade International and our evening with a host family who treated us to some amazing Gautemalan food and company. For a few hours on one day, we had a chance to visit Antigua.

“vacationing” in a place with the 4th highest murder rate in the world

Hey everyone. Thanks for your love, support, and prayers.

Minhee and I (and one of my ODW volunteer staff) are currently “vacationing” in an “urban ghetto” marked with the 4th highest murder rate in the world. We’ve taken some personal vacation time to travel to Guatemala as invited guests (for a few days) to do research, learn, and network with some NGOs for some possible future partnerships. We are spending the bulk of our time with an NGO called Lemonada International.

We’ve heard and partly witnessed some painful stories of violence, drug abuse, broken families, and the ugly cycle of extreme poverty.

There is an estimate of 60-100K people living in the urban ghetto known as La Limonada. It is an urban slum community built Read the rest of this entry »

where do you want to travel to?

As we begin a new week, let’s host a simple community building question. Hopefully, we’ll be able to entice our quiet blog readers and lurkers to join in. In honor the Winter Olympics going on right now in Vancouver/Whistler, here are the questions:

If you could travel to any TWO places in the world, where would you go and why?

What are your favorite destinations you’ve already traveled to already?

One of my favorite places in the world happen to be Read the rest of this entry »

seattle low tide adventures & most beautiful summer city

lowtide3

Earlier this year, I asked my readers for their opinion about the “most beautiful city in the world.” There were many compelling nominations.  Having lived in San Francisco and having visited other beautiful places including Capetown & Johannesburg (South Africa), Vancouver BC, NYC, San Diego, Monterey/Carmel, London, Hamburg (Germany), Beijing/Shanghai, Bangkok/Chang Mai, Kagoshima (Japan), etc…

I don’t know if there’s a more beautiful place than Seattle…during the summer.

The weather is amazing as many will note but it’s in the summer when you really appreciate the amazing topography of the area.  Within 30 minutes, I can be by lakes, oceans, mountains, trails, rivers, and camping by many of these natural beauties.  I love the beauty of the area as it compellingly reminds me of God’s magnificent handiwork. So beautiful and creative.

Yesterday, Minhee and I took our kids to a local beach in Seattle called Golden Gardens to enjoy the Low Tide adventures.  Here are some pics Read the rest of this entry »

Flying a fallen soldier home…

02

In honor of Memorial Day…With much gratitude to our soldiers and with deep longing and prayer for peace. Freedom is [Not] Free.

Yesterday,  I had a quick 24 hour trip from Seattle to Chicago.  As I was returning on Thursday night to Sea-Tac airport and eager to get back to my wife and kids from a good but exhausting trip, I (and the rest of the passengers) was getting peeved that the de-planing process was taking such a long time.  In fact, we didn’t move for at least 15 minutes.   As I looked out the window, I began to notice a growing group of police cars, ambulances, firetrucks and military vehicles gather around the side of the airplane.  Then, folks began to line up…

And when folks began to salute, it then hit me what was going on.

Our flight was carrying a fallen soldier home.

Now, I don’t have more details of who Read the rest of this entry »

your city and your ideal future home?

feature-92-seattle31

In light of Seattle being named ‘City of the Year’ by Fast Company magazine (article below), let’s begin a new week with a community building post.  A ‘community building’ post is an invitation to get off the sidelilnes and write a comment.  Share your answer and a bit of yourself.

Here’s the question:

Where do you currently live?  Do you like your current city/town? And if you could live anywhere else in the world (not visit but actually live), where would that be?

My answer: Obviously, I live in Seattle.  We are heading towards our 12 year anniversary in Seattle this June.  It’s amazing to think that nearly 12 years ago, Minhee and I packed up our station wagon (about 5 months after getting married) and made our way to Seattle – not quite certain what the future would hold.  I shared more about why I love Seattle here.  Many of you also shared your answers for the world’s most beautiful city.

If I could live anywhere, my choices:   Read the rest of this entry »

the beauty of south africa

While there were some painful images of poverty and human suffering, I also saw the beauty of South Africa.  During my short stay there, I saw both its beauty and depravity.  One of the folks I met in South Africa asked me to make sure I shared with people how beautiful South Africa was in light of the distorted perceptions that some folks have that Africa is only corruption and poverty.

I made that promise.  And so, I am sharing these pics [taken my myself and another fella from Boston] to show a glimpse of the beauty of South Africa.  Mr. Leo: I hope I made you proud with these photos.  Thanks for letting me use your Canon G9.

If you’ve got any questions about any pics, let me know. Enjoy: Read the rest of this entry »
