media and commercials: “women are objects to be objectified and marketed and packaged for consumption”

I don’t want to be about censorship but at some point, some things deserve to be thrown in the garbage.  Commercials that exploit and objectify women aren’t only offensive and disgusting…but they’re dangerous.

First, some background:

Who watched the Super Bowl? Perhaps, a better question might be: “Who didn’t watch the Super Bowl?”

In 2011, the game drew the largest audience ever in history:

Last year’s Super Bowl drew the largest audience in American television history, averaging 111 million viewers. All total, 163 million people watched at least part of the game. That’s more than half of the population.

Yesterday’s game likely drew about 120 111.3 million viewers. This – in part – explains why the cost of a 30 second commercial was set at $3.5 million dollars.

Wow.

And while there were some good, funny, witty, and brilliant commercials, there were (and have been for some time) a growing number of commercials that are just downright offensive.  It’s not new but each year, they seem to be getting worse and worse – so much that the commercials are the things I least look forward to. After noticing couple of those commercials, I couldn’t help but send this tweet to Go Daddy:

Dear @GoDaddy: Your objectification and exploitation of women disgust me. #HopeAnElephantStompsAllOverYourServers Read the rest of this entry »

the greatest commercial…ever

Don’t get offended but every now and then, I like to post complete nonsense.

In fact, if you don’t laugh after watching this commercial (youtube video below), you need to go find your sense of humor.  I give you my nomination for the greatest commercial…ever…featuring Old Spice’s “The Man Your Man Can Smell.”

best and worst super bowl commercials?

Like the billions of other idolaters, I watched (most of) the Super Bowl yesterday with a bunch of Questers.

The game was ok but the majority of the commercials were mediocre. Umm, I couldn’t get the obsession with underpants stuff in couple commercials. And while I was in and out, I didn’t catch all the commercials but nothing particularly wowed me.

In my opinion, the best commercial belonged to Google. It was simple. It was human. It was captivating. And in 30 seconds, with basic typing…they told the best story (and re-affirmed to me the power of story). And it clearly identified the source of the commercial because well…Google’s logo was on the screen the entire time. There were numerous commercials and I had no idea what or who they were trying to “sell.” That’s not good.

A distant 2nd was Read the rest of this entry »

the apple vs pc commercial wars

The debate between Apple vs PC will always rage on – particularly if you account for the higher costs of the Macbooks but how about them commercial wars!  They’ve certainly escalated with the “I’m a PC” commercials all over the place like the one below.  It’s nice but having Deepak Choprah killed it for me.

There’s numerous more out there.  They’re good, practical, some are cute, and they attempt to connect to “regular folks” like this “laptop hunter” commercials.  But is it just me or does Microsoft always seems to be a step or two behind Apple.

Computer hardware/software debate aside, what do you think?

Check out this new Apple commercial again making fun of the above PC commercials. It’s painfully hilarious because Read the rest of this entry »
