holy godtube raises 30 million

Show me the money.

I was a little stunned yesterday when I received word via my news feeds that GodTube – the Christian version of YouTube raised 30 million dollars in funding.

Here’s a story that is either the sign of an enormous bubble or an indication that perhaps entrepreneurs need to have a bit more faith (literally and figuratively). GodTube, the YouTube for the religious, has raised $30 million at a $150 million valuation, according to Rafat Ali. The funding comes from GLG Partners, a hedge fund. [via Mashable]

GodTube was only launched last summer by Chris Wyatt, a seminarian from Dallas Theological Seminary and now reportedly has about 2 million users.

I don’t want to sound like a hater or Doubting Thomas here. Read the rest of this entry »

microsoft withdraws offer for yahoo

After speaking with a dozen of Microsoft employees that go to my church couple months ago, most thought well of Microsoft’s bid for Yahoo.  I’m not sure if they actually thought well of MSFT acquiring Yahoo or if it was the idea of doing something BIG to go toe-to-toe with Google.  Morale didn’t seem all that great when I visited one of their gazillion cafeterias at the Redmond campus.  Getting free soft drinks is one thing but getting pummelled by Google is another.

Well, Microsoft formally withdrew its offer from Yahoo tonight.  47.5 billion dollars just didn’t cut it.  Read the rest of this entry »

earth hour – going dark tonight

We’re going to do our part to lend support to the global movement and awareness of conservation via Earth Hour.  The international movement for Earth Hour is simple:  Turn off your electricity for one hour in your respective homes and businesses from 8-9pm tonight.  This will be a great opportunity for conversation with the children in our home.

Check out this short video [2:45] about Earth Hour:

And for those who were unaware of Earth Hour, I hope you will consider going dark for a simple 60 minutes tonight.  And while you participate in Earth Hour, I would also encourage you to be mindful of the great amount of people in our world that still do not have access to electricity: Read the rest of this entry »

quest web 2.0

The tech geeks were embarrassed with our old site and wanted to utilize some fancy but user friendly platform called Drupal.  So, Jason Rust, one of our interns and a professional web developer, took it upon himself to give birth to Quest 2.0.  Without further ado, here’s the beta version of our church’s new website.  *And if you know of folks who might be interested in our church community, please forward this link or the church website to them.

i thought bill gates was my friend

bill-gates-ad.jpg

All along…I thought Bill Gates was my friend.  But he hasn’t returned any of my requests.  What’s up Bill?

He was generous enough [through the Gates Foundation via the Seattle Foundation] to throw several G’s to help with the vision of Q Cafe in the early years.  However, he hasn’t returned any of my friend requests on Facebook.  I thought we were tight like that but after couple months, I hadn’t heard from him.  I was starting to take it personally but I know he’s been busy with with the transition from Microsoft.  But then again, I figured he’d now have some extra time with retirement.  Or maybe he’s secretly upset that Yahoo has initially spurned Microsoft’s offer?  Or maybe he’s bummed about Starbucks no longer offering sandwiches at their “cafes?”  Or maybe he’s upset about the real estate prices in Seattle?  The Sonics likely move out of Seattle?

What’s up Billy?

But today, I found out why he hasn’t returned my friend request…  Read the rest of this entry »

the apple cult

My parents purchased what I believe to be an Apple IIc many years ago when I was in elementary or junior high. I didn’t really have the brain capacity to enjoy it.  Played a few computer games on it.  Never used computers again – honestly -until I hit college and grad school.  It was during grad school that I  had a couple friends that were fantatics about Apple computers.  These Apple “evangelists” were trying to convert me – even then – to the Apple Cult… Read the rest of this entry »

bill gates’ last day

This is a hilarious video of Bill Gates shown at the CES as part of his final keynote speech this past week.  I know that it’s easy to make fun of him because of the haircut, the nerdiness, the sweater, the Microsoft empire, etc. but the more I reflect on his legacy and particularly, his philantrophy and foundation, I’m amazed.  I know many younger folks are drawn to Steve Jobs of Apple, but there’s something very appealing about Bill that grows on me.

Check out the video. He’s got some notable friends…with funny cameos by Spielberg, Bono, Jay-Z, Barack Obama, and many more. Read the rest of this entry »

facebook and listen to your wife

Social networking seems to be all the rage [click image below].  Email and blogging have provided plenty of connection for me which is why I’ve been slow to get on the social networking bandwagon.  But two months ago, I sold out and joined Facebook.

And after two months of using Facebook, I’m a fan.  While I don’t fully understand all the features and still get weirded out seeing what others are adding, removing, who’s friends with who, and blah blah blah, the positives certainly outweigh the negatives.

What I’m most impressed by include: Read the rest of this entry »

what a world

Consider how fast our world is changing.  The world I wake up to the next morning will be different than this day.  The world is changing so fast.  I think about the first time I used something called electronic mail 10 years ago.  It was so new and scary…

But to demonstrate how much the world has changed, consider my children: Read the rest of this entry »
