the best live music in seattle!

Okay, that is clearly an exaggeration but we’re still kicking at Q Cafe.  We’re still doing our part to add to the vibrancy, art, and culture of Seattle.  But without a shadow of a doubt, I can say that Q Cafe is the best live music in Interbay!  [...a Seattle joke]

Before I headed off to Asia for my sabbatical, the Q Cafe advisory board and I had one big decision to make: We brought on a new Live Music/Art Director and we’re very excited to welcome Melissa Cushman [pic below]. Bethany, our previous director was working 147 different jobs and decided [wisely] to cut one back.  Melissa is looking for VOLUNTEERS for our shows.  The benefits include: free coffee + free admission to some great shows.  Email her at melissa@qcafe.org.

Question:  Which local [Northwest] artists: singer/songwriters, musicians, and bands do you want us to invite to play at the Q Cafe?

Here’s are the upcoming weekend shows including Shaun Groves: Read the rest of this entry »

exclusive photos and review of the prototype iPhone 3G

I have a special treat for my blog readers.  I had a chance to play around with the prototype iPhone 3G today.  As you know, on June 9 at the WWDC, Apple and Steve Jobs released info, specs, and prices of the new iPhone 3G to be offically released to the rest of the “average public” on July 11.

But I have connections.  Here are some pics and commentary: Read the rest of this entry »

rapper xzibit mourns son’s death

Some of you may think I’m on some sort of celebrity binge.  I’m not [and I don't subscribe to TMZ] but when I stumbled onto news about the death of Xzibit’s baby son, it sucked.  For folks whose musical taste lean towards Rick Astley, Xzibit [Alvin Nathaniel Joiner] is a rapper, actor [Gridiron Gang], and TV personality [Pimp My Ride].  Sadly, couple of you will be offended that as a pastor, I’ve chosen to blog about an artist with “questionable” lyrics and expressions.  If that’s the case, you’re missing the point…by a lot.

greatest music video ever?

Let’s have some fun here.  What’s the greatest [your favorite] music video ever?  MJ?  Duran Duran?  The Police?  or Rick Astley?

Maybe it’s because Quest is so “young” but every time I mention a band that enjoyed from the 80s, people look dazed and confused.  For example, on a car ride back from a conference, I could not believe that Jason The Intern had no idea who these folks were.  I nearly fired his arse right there but I’m a compassion, merciful, and gracious pastor and boss. Here’s my vote for Greatest Music Video – ever: Read the rest of this entry »

“all i need” by radiohead

Check out this music video for “All I Need” by Radiohead.  Haunting and compelling as it highlights exploitation and trafficking.  And before some of you freak out, I am not insituating that the global economy is about slavery.  Of course not.  But, it’s possible to make a case for a level of exploitation.   Exploitation and enablement/empowerment looks different, no?.

“All I Need”, quite possibly the sexiest song Radiohead has ever written, just became a hell of a lot less sexy…and a lot more important. Read the rest of this entry »

asian pacific american heritage month

For those that don’t know, May is Asian Pacific American [APA] Heritage month.  Yes, I am Asian and I’m a very proud Asian-American.  I’m sure each of you were looking forward to this well publicized in the media month.  :)

I’m too lazy so am cutting and pasting these Asian American interest resources from “that Chinese guy” – one of my local regular reads. Read the rest of this entry »

getting in shape

The hopes I shared several months ago in Health and Weight – to start exercising regularly, stop snacking post 10pm, losing some pounds, and getting back into shape aren’t going too well.  If I had to give myself a grade, it would be a “D+” but it’s only midterms right now. I still have time.

But it doesn’t help that this guy keeps ragging on me and my body.  Yesterday, he called my tummy a kangaroo pouch so I took him to the golf range and spanked him.  Read the rest of this entry »

indiana jones, 12th cylon, and must see video

An amazing story about sportsmanship in a college women’s softball game last Saturday in Ellensburg, Washington.  Do yourself a favor and WATCH THE VIDEO.  [I'll try to imbed it later.]

Western Oregon’s Sara Tucholsky is carried around the bases by Central Washington’s Liz Wallace, left, and Mallory Holtman after injuring her knee following her home run during their softball game Saturday April 26, 2008, in Ellensburg, Wash. With two runners on base and a strike against her, Tucholsky uncorked her best swing and did something she had never done, in high school or college. Her first home run cleared the center-field fence

dating: old testament style or speed dating?

Someone sent me this email about 14 way to find a wife – Old Testament style.  It’s brutal, funny, and a little scary.  But just in case you don’t want to go Old Testament…a group of folks at Quest is sponsoring a unique fundraiser to benefit local charities:  Christian Speed Dating.   If you’re from Seattle and single, join the festivities.  All the info on the bottom in case you’re interested.  Here’s the 14 ways to find your wife via Old Testament style:

  1. Find an attractive prisoner of war, bring her home, shave her head, trim her nails, and give her new clothes. Then she’s yours. – (Deuteronomy 21:11-13)
  2. Find a prostitute and marry her. – (Hosea 1:1-3)
  3. Find a man with seven daughters, and impress him by watering his flock.- Moses (Exodus 2:16-21) Read the rest of this entry »

define/dissolve the relationship

Here’s another attempt by Christians to copycat the original…and it has produced Stuff Christians Like.  And there are so many more out there but this one is actually pretty good.  Here’s one of the recent entries from Stuff Christians Like:  #189 [G]DTR as in Define the Relationship or better yet, Dissolve the Relationship.

You think Christians are timid when it comes to dating?  Umm, they’re really awkward when it comes to breaking up or Dissolving the Relationship because they feel like they have to make it really Spiritual.  Really awkward.  Do you have more to contribute to the list below?

my truck nutz is bigger than your truck nutz

Has this blog hit a low point?  Will my wife kick my arse for posting photos of Hooter girls?  Am I infatuated with being more manly?  There is nothing more manly than a huge 4 x 4 truck pimped out with truck testicles.  This is funny crazy – even crazier that a Florida senator admitted he had a pair on his truck.

I’m assuming that the truck nutz could be very distracting on the road and lead to possible accidents.  I can imagine someone saying:

“Officer.  It isn’t my fault. I was distracted by those things.” Read the rest of this entry »

man of your dreams

I started blogging for numerous reasons but in short, I wanted to be accessible to folks and also share and add my voice to the larger blogosphere.  I did not anticipate that e-friendships could actually develop through blogging.  I also did not anticipate that the blog would resonate with others in blogosphere.  Thanks for reading, commenting, inquiring, pushing back, and simply, journeying…

But I have to admit, this is a little bizarre.  Yesterday, this dude from Atlanta Nashville – ElderJ at Intersection -  who I’ve never met but is on my blogroll and occasionally comments here had a dream about me - where I’m naked.  Sorry.  Bad joke.  Anyway, anyone want to try to interpret this dream?  Check out his blog and let me know if I need to get some sort of blogo-restraining-order.

Here’s the dream: Read the rest of this entry »

a big difference in meaning

Two Sundays ago, I made one of those embarrassing slips during a sermon.  Instead of saying, “Jesus came as a ransom for many…”, this slipped out:

“Jesus came as a ransom for money.”

But it’s not as bad as this: Read the rest of this entry »

“once” – a beautiful movie

Wow.  Tonight, Minhee and I rented and watched the film, “Once” and I have to say while it may not be the greatest of films, it was such a delightful and hopeful film.  What’s amazing was that this film was made for only $160,000. [ For comparison, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was created for $300 million; Troy was created for $180 million].

“Once” - featuring beautiful music – captured our attention, lifted our spirits, and honestly, it made me recommit myself to my guitar and songwriting.  My guitar [11+ years ago before marriage] – used to be my best friend.  I sold it years ago and certainly regretted that decision tonight but with the wife’s permission, I’m ready to be friends again with a guitar.

Seriously, go rent and enjoy this film.  If you’ve seen it already, what did you think?  Question:  What’s been a recent film that has lifted your spirits/hope? Read the rest of this entry »

the power of rick astley

After a very busy weekend, I want to share a little comic relief.  Several months ago, I posted the famous video of Rick Astley and his hip dance moves.  But it appears that I have underestimated the power and influence of Rick Astley.  Check out this video.  I want to officially apologize to Rick and his fan club for being so quick to judge him, his music, and his dance moves… Read the rest of this entry »

10 facts about st. patrick’s day

Today is St. Patricks’ Day.  It’s a rare occasion that it falls within Holy Week.  In fact, this won’t happen again until 2160. Here’s 10 other facts about St. Patrick via Relevant Magazine.  There’s a few things on this list I had no idea [like Green was not the original color] about so I figure it would be a good share.  I don’t know what it means to wish someone Happy St. Patrick’s Day but Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

St. Patrick’s Day has become a cultural phenomenon in the United States, forever associated with Irish pride, copious amounts of alcohol consumption and those weird green milkshakes from McDonald’s. But, how much do you really know about where it all came from? Here are 10 facts you may not have known about St. Patrick’s Day. Read the rest of this entry »
