the twouble and twuth about twitters

After mulling over Twitter and receiving some advice whether to Tweet or Not to Tweet,  I sold out my soul and  joined Twitter two weeks ago and I’m still twying to “get it.”  One reason why it’s been awkward is because I’m used to Facebook and while they are part of the larger social media boom, they twend to speak different languages – or at least to me – and the audience is also different.   There are times I wonder, “What is the point?”  although I am amazed at its ability and potential to connect people all around the world. Just yesterday, Lance Armstrong sent me a personal tweet [and also to about 400,o00 people] that he was fine after his bicycle crash that broke his collarbone.

Another reason why I joined Twitter is hearing of its power through a phenomenon called Kogi Truck [a la the Taco Trucks] in Los Angeles.  According to the article from the LA Times, fans learn about where the Kogi Trucks will be going via Twitter and when the trucks arrive, anywhere from 300-800 customers are waiting in line.  Crazy:

The result: The Kogi Korean BBQ taco truck. (@kogibbq on Twitter) After celebrating a Nov. 20 soft opening, the roving vehicle has emerged as a social-networking juggernaut, drawing 300 to 800 people each time it parks (often several times in an evening) and spawning a burgeoning cyber-hippie movement affectionately referred to as “Kogi kulture.”

But this video below is absolutely hilarious and is a must see.  It’s a great animated commentary about all things Twitter.

What do you think?

Makes me wonder what the next big thing in technology and social networking will be.  Any guesses?

Twitter hasn’t arrived yet for most people. The concept of twitter is the “hive mind” or collective knowledge. Right now, most of the people on Twitter are tech types and some celebrities. Twitter won’t really gain its usefulness until it becomes widely accepted. But there is a LOT of potential there.

Twitter is a great way to quickly disseminate ideas, to interact real time on issues and to develop a community around common interests (kind of like being back in college). The downside of twitter is that there will always be those that broadcast the banal or attempt to out-hip others. I think this is the natural progression from texting, yet people need to develop an etiquette that keeps pace with technology, to be engaged but not exhibitionist (that’s what we have reality tv for). Just don’t summon the Fail Whale!

Hey Eugene – I heard the article on the Taco Truck on NPR yesterday and was amazed that people would travel where the truck ‘tweeted’ – I have the same conflict b/w Twitter and Facebook – they have different avenues and I wish FB updated twitter and I could see tweets on FB…someday hopefully.

@anne: yes, i’ll keep tweeting. i have ambitions of starting my own version of kogi truck here in seattle. :)

no, the vision for our global poverty initiative is possible through the gifts of technology.

  7. What’s been interesting to me is with the twitter app on Facebook, I get different responses from both groups. My twitter friends tend to comment on some topics/items while my Facebook friends usually comment on the others.

@Jackp there was a way to update Twitter from Facebook a while back but I never looked into it – I’ve always preferred Twitter updating Facebook.

As for the future… this looks like an awesome guestimation:

“I’ve seen the future of Google & wish that it was here now! http://swarm.me/1gg
