Is Tiger Woods the greatest individual athlete ever – in history?
He wins again today to mark his 5th consecutive PGA victory. His accomplishments thus far and note that he’s still only 32 years old:
Eldrick “Tiger” Woods (born December 30, 1975) is an American professional golfer whose achievements to date rank him among the most successful golfers of all time. Currently the World No. 1, Woods was the highest paid professional athlete in 2006, having earned an estimated $100 million from winnings and endorsements. Golf Digest predicts Woods will become the world’s first billionaire athlete in 2010.
Woods has won 13 professional major golf championships, the second-most of any male player, and 64 PGA Tour events, tied for third all time. He has more career major wins and career PGA Tour wins than any other active golfer. He is the youngest player to achieve the career Grand Slam, and the youngest and fastest to win 50 tournaments on Tour. Woods has held the number one position in the world rankings for the most consecutive weeks and for the greatest total number of weeks. [more via wiki]
So, is he the greatest indnividual athlete ever?

The Seattle Supersonics are likely headed off to Oklahoma in the future. Geez, but it appears they checked out a season or two early. The score in their game tonight against Denver Nuggets: 168-116. No, that’s not a typo…168-116. A great quote from Chris Wilcox, a Seattle player:
“We just lost tonight. We lost by a lot…”

i can tell you watched the same episode of sportscenter i did. but how can you forget the most significant stat of all?! 22 IN ROW! 10 IN A ROW WITHOUT YAO! 31 OF THE LAST 34!Now the Rockets have sole possession of 1st place in the West.
Man that last putt Tiger sank was sick. I loved how excited he got though, throwing his hat in the air and all..
Oh and despite losing to UCLA 3 times this season, I still have faith in my Cardinal. But it’s gonna be rough getting past Texas and Memphis…
It’s certainly easy to make the case for Tiger Woods as the greatest individual athlete. There are other notables in their respective sports: Jordan, Gretzky, Babe Ruth, etc. but no one has been this dominant in their respective sports. And the guy is only 32. He’s going to dominate for another 25 years. By the time he’s done, it’s going to be sick.
When I saw the final score of the Sonics game, I had to do a double take, especially since the game was just in 4 quarters of regulation.
I’m going with Tennessee to go all the way.
I grew up with Michael Jordan, so I have to go with him as the best individual athlete.
PE,
first thing first, golf is not a sport it is a game. i am a huge fan of tiger, but let’s be real…greatest athlete ever, i don’t think so. that honor would have to go to cyclist Eddy “The Cannibal” Merckx.
sonics…good riddance.
